Niah Poetry: Niah’s Dreams, Drunk on Vietnamese Beer

Preface

Back in Niah, I spent my evenings practising songs and having a few drinks. Along the way, I wrote a few short poems — Niah Poetry.

Some memories come from distant places; others linger in once-familiar land. As I drank, the past began to surface.

I’ve gathered these short poems here.

Flowers beside an old wooden doorway in Mechelen.

The Echoes of White Wine from Mechelen

White wine makes the warm light blush rippling over Mechelen’s paving stones flowers sway like bells in the wind answering the distant chimes

This summer’s scent of grain mingled with a passion hard to bear briefly paralyses the everyday

And the time difference mingles with longing in a drunkenness within easy reach searching… searching for the scent of your shoulder

That Organic Tobacco They Still Sell

dried leaves, tobacco, organic nicotine

between the farm chores, betel nut or rice wine

freshly killed keli, paku picked along the road

on plates at the afternoon rest

turn into the nourishment of laughter

turn into, years later…

memories of coffee-shop chatter about the rise and fall of oil palm prices

Brown muddy water with rippling reflections of trees, creating a calm, abstract surface pattern.
An old tree’s reflection, softened by the river’s ripples.

She Appears Here Again

She once clothed the river

in flowers

she once sheltered innocence

standing in the wind

She once carried

legends on the villagers’ lips

she once left a reflection

in Xiao Li’s verses

In memory

the night sky blazes red

by the time the rising sun peeks out

she is already a soul fading into the air

Split-screen of highways by lush limestone mountains, with a motorbike, cars, palm trees, and a calm tropical sky.
Between Ipoh and Batu Niah, mountains, meetings and different ways of saying goodbye.

Sighs Between the Mountain Town and Mount Subis

Beyond the mountain, still more mountains

you and I meet

a thousand cups may not be enough

Beyond the mountain, still more mountains

who meets whom again

a thousand words, none connecting

Beyond the mountain

hello, goodbye.

Beyond the mountain

how have you been? Next time… goodbye…

What Lingers

A tangle of thoughts and feelings, distilled with a little help from the drink into a few short poems. The next time I read them, they may take on a different mood.
